Alanya Travel Guide: Castle, Cleopatra Beach & Airport Transfers

Alanya is the Turkish Riviera at its liveliest. A great rock crowned by a Seljuk castle juts into the sea, splitting the coast into two long bays; on one side is the legendary Cleopatra Beach, on the other a working harbour and the Red Tower. Below, the town hums with restaurants, bazaars and a seafront promenade that stays busy well after dark. If Belek is about switching off, Alanya is about being in the middle of things.

First, the setting. The castle headland is genuinely dramatic, and the views from the top — over the rooftops, the harbour and the sweep of Cleopatra Beach — are some of the best on the coast. The beach itself, named after the legend that Cleopatra swam here, is wide, sandy and Blue-Flag clean.

Second, value and energy. Alanya is generally more affordable than the polished resorts further west, with a huge range of hotels and a nightlife and dining scene that runs from quiet meze terraces to full-on clubs. The Damlataş Cave, the harbour boat trips around the caves beneath the castle, and the Dim River and cave inland all add easy variety.

It is a bigger, busier place than Side or Belek — which is the appeal for some and the reason others prefer quieter bases. Know which traveller you are before you book.

Alanya is unusual in being served by two airports, and choosing the right transfer depends on where you fly:

• Gazipaşa–Alanya Airport (GZP) is the local one, about 40 km east of Alanya — a 40–50 minute drive. If your flight lands here, the transfer is short and cheap.
• Antalya Airport (AYT) has far more flights, but it is about 125 km west of Alanya — a two to two-and-a-half hour drive along the coast.

That AYT distance is the single most important thing to plan for. Two hours-plus in a metered taxi is costly, and a shared shuttle on that route can become an all-afternoon affair.
