Best Time to Visit Alanya: Month-by-Month Guide, Castle, Beaches & Transfer

Alanya is the big, sun-soaked resort city at the eastern end of the Turkish Riviera, wrapped around a dramatic rocky peninsula crowned by a Seljuk castle. It has the warmest sea and the longest season on the Turkish coast — a subtropical strip where bananas grow and you can swim well into November. Add the golden sands of Cleopatra Beach, the harbour's iconic Red Tower, the stalactite caves of Damlataş and Dim, pirate-ship boat trips around the peninsula and a famous nightlife, and Alanya packs in beach, history and fun. Uniquely on this coast it has two airports: tiny Gazipaşa-Alanya just 40 km away, and Antalya about 125 km west. Because the season is so long, the best time to visit Alanya depends on what you want — beach days, the castle and caves in comfort, nightlife, or the lowest prices of the year.

Spring in Alanya (April–May)

Spring brings pleasant 22–26°C days, green hills, far smaller crowds and noticeably lower prices. The sea warms early here — already 19°C in April and a swimmable 22°C by late May, ahead of most of the coast. It is the ideal season for the castle, the Red Tower, Damlataş Cave and the boat trips before the heat, and lovely for the beaches. Best for couples, history lovers, families and value-seeking travellers before the school holidays. Bring layers for cool evenings.

Summer in Alanya (June–August)

High summer is hot and dependable: 31–34°C, near-zero rain, and the warmest sea in Turkey (25–29°C) — the peak season. Cleopatra Beach and the long eastern beaches are packed, the boat trips and water sports run full schedules, and the bar street roars after dark. The heat makes climbing to the castle tough at midday, so go early or late. It is the most expensive period and the busiest time at both airports, so a pre-booked transfer matters most now. Beat the heat with morning and late-afternoon beach time and a shady lunch.

Autumn in Alanya (September–October)

For many travellers this is the sweet spot, and Alanya's long warm season really shows. The sea holds its summer warmth (26–28°C) while the air eases to a comfortable 27–31°C, crowds thin and prices fall. September still feels like full summer for swimming and boat trips; October stays warm and golden — superb for the castle, the caves and the beach, with the sea still beautifully swimmable. Excellent for couples, families and history lovers travelling after the peak.

Winter in Alanya (November–March)

Alanya has the mildest winter on the Turkish coast, with daytime highs of 16–22°C and sunny spells between the rains (December and January are wettest). The sea cools to around 18–20°C — too cool for most, though hardy swimmers still dip in November. Many beach businesses quieten, but Alanya keeps a real year-round life thanks to its large expat community, so cafés, markets and the old town stay open. It is the cheapest time by far, and the castle and caves are beautifully quiet. Pack a light jacket and a rain layer.

Alanya month-by-month at a glance

  • April — green, mild, cheap; sea already warming, perfect for the castle and caves.
  • May — warm, sea swimmable, great value; superb all-round before the crowds.
  • June — warm sea, lively but pre-peak; excellent for everything.
  • July — peak heat and crowds, full beaches and nightlife; sightsee early.
  • August — peak and busiest; very hot, warmest sea in Turkey, book everything early.
  • September — still summer, warm sea, thinning crowds; a top month.
  • October — warm, golden, sea still swimmable; superb for beach and sightseeing.
  • November — mild, the warm sea lingers, first rains; lowest prices.
  • December–March — the mildest coastal winter, sunny spells; cheapest, quiet old town.

Best time to visit Alanya by type of traveller

  • Beach lovers & families: July–August for the warmest sea, or May–June and September–October for warm water with fewer crowds and a longer comfortable season.
  • History & sightseeing (castle, caves): April–May and October, when climbing the castle is comfortable.
  • Nightlife & young travellers: July–August for the busiest bar street and clubs.
  • Couples: May, June and September–October — warm, romantic and better value.
  • Long-season & winter-sun seekers: late autumn and the mild winter for the warmest coast and lowest prices.
  • Budget travellers: November–March for the cheapest stays, accepting a quieter resort.

Alanya Castle and the Red Tower

Crowning the peninsula, Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi) is a magnificent 13th-century Seljuk fortress built by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad, with kilometres of walls, an inner citadel (İçkale), an old village, a mosque and breathtaking views over both bays. At the harbour below stands the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule), the octagonal Seljuk tower that is the symbol of Alanya, beside the historic Tersane — the only surviving Seljuk shipyard — and the Tophane. Together they make the old town a living museum, best explored in the cooler morning or the mild shoulder seasons.

Cleopatra Beach and Alanya's beaches

Cleopatra Beach (Kleopatra Plajı), west of the peninsula, is Alanya's most famous beach — a long curve of fine golden sand and clear Blue Flag water, named for the legend that Cleopatra swam here. East of the castle lies Keykubat Beach, and the coast runs on for kilometres of sandy beaches through Oba, Tosmur, Kestel and Mahmutlar, with İncekum to the west. The sand is golden, the sea the warmest in Turkey, and the long shoreline means there is always space — ideal for families and a long, comfortable swimming season.

Damlataş Cave and the caves

Right beside Cleopatra Beach, Damlataş Cave is a beautiful stalactite and stalagmite cavern whose warm, humid air (around 22°C and very high humidity) has long been visited for its supposed benefits to asthma sufferers — one of Turkey's first show caves. In the mountains inland, the vast Dim Cave (Dim Mağarası) is a 360-metre lit cavern of dramatic formations, often combined with lunch at the Dim River. The caves are a perfect cool escape on a hot day and a year-round attraction.

Boat trips around the peninsula

A classic Alanya boat trip sails right around the castle peninsula, calling at a string of sea caves — the Pirates' Cave (Korsanlar Mağarası), the glowing Phosphorus Cave, the Lovers' Cave and Cleopatra's Beach — usually aboard cheerful pirate-style boats with swim stops and music. It is one of the best-value, most fun days out on the coast, running from spring to autumn and busiest in summer. For something calmer, smaller private boats and sunset cruises explore the same beautiful coast.

Dim River, Sapadere Canyon and the mountains

Behind Alanya, the Taurus mountains offer cool escapes from the summer heat. The Dim River (Dim Çayı) runs through a green valley lined with restaurants built over the cold rushing water — a refreshing lunch spot — while the Sapadere Canyon rewards a scenic drive with turquoise pools, a waterfall and a boardwalk through the gorge. Combined with the Dim Cave, they make a wonderful nature day trip, especially welcome in the hot months and beautiful in spring and autumn.

Nightlife and the expat scene

Alanya has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes on the coast, centred on the harbour bar street and a cluster of clubs, busiest in July and August. By day it is a real, year-round city with a large international community — German, Scandinavian, Dutch and Russian residents, especially in Mahmutlar to the east — which keeps markets, cafés and services open all year. That mix gives Alanya more genuine town life than a pure resort, alongside the beaches and history.

Best day trips from Alanya

  • Boat trip around the peninsula — the pirate caves, Phosphorus Cave and Cleopatra Beach.
  • Dim Cave & Dim River — a stalactite cave and riverside restaurants in the mountains.
  • Sapadere Canyon — turquoise pools and a waterfall in a cool gorge.
  • Side — the seaside Temple of Apollo and ancient city, west along the coast.
  • Alanya Castle & old town — the Seljuk fortress and Red Tower, in the heart of the resort.

Events through the year

Alanya's calendar is led by the beach and nightlife in summer, with festivals, watersports events and a busy harbour. Spring and autumn suit the castle, caves and boat-trip season without the peak heat, and the international community keeps a year-round programme of markets and events. The resort is busiest in July and August; if specific dates matter, book your stay and airport transfer early, as both Gazipaşa and Antalya are at their busiest in high summer.

Alanya vs Side or Antalya

Choose Alanya for the warmest sea and longest season, the Seljuk castle and Red Tower, golden Cleopatra Beach, lively nightlife and a real year-round city. Side (west) adds famous ancient ruins right by the beach; Antalya (125 km) is the big regional city with an old town and an international airport. Alanya is farther from Antalya Airport, which is exactly why its own Gazipaşa airport — just 40 km away — makes arrival so easy.

  • Winter: a light jacket and a rain layer; enjoy the mildest coastal winter, sunny days, quiet sights and the lowest prices.
