Best Time to Visit Side: Month-by-Month Guide, Ancient City & Antalya Transfer

Side is the rare place where you can wander among 2,000-year-old ruins in the morning and lie on a golden Blue Flag beach in the afternoon. Set on a peninsula on Turkey's warm Mediterranean coast, this ancient Greek-Roman port has its monuments woven right through the modern town — the iconic seaside Temple of Apollo, a huge Roman theatre, colonnaded streets and a museum of Roman baths — all wrapped around long sandy beaches and a belt of all-inclusive resorts. The closest airport is Antalya (~65 km, about 70 minutes). Because the coast is hot and the season long, the best time to visit Side depends on what you want — beach days, the cooler months for exploring the ruins, the magical sunset at the temple, or the lowest prices of the year.

Spring in Side (April–May)

Spring brings pleasant 22–27°C days, green countryside, far smaller crowds and noticeably lower prices. The sea is cool early (18°C in April) but warms to a swimmable 21°C by late May. It is the ideal season for the ancient city — comfortable temperatures and thin crowds among the Temple of Apollo, the theatre and the old town — and lovely for the harbour and first beach days. Best for history lovers, couples, families and value-seeking travellers before the school holidays. Bring layers for cool evenings.

Summer in Side (June–August)

High summer is hot and dependable: 32–35°C, near-zero rain, and a warm sea (24–28°C) — the peak season for the beaches and resorts. The old town, beaches and resort belt are at their busiest, and the temple at sunset draws crowds. The heat makes midday sightseeing tough, so explore the ruins early or late and save the middle of the day for the beach or pool. It is the most expensive period and the busiest time at Antalya airport, so a pre-booked transfer matters most now. Beat the heat with morning and late-afternoon beach time and a shady lunch among the ruins.

Autumn in Side (September–October)

For many travellers this is the sweet spot. The sea holds its summer warmth (25–27°C) while the air eases to a comfortable 26–31°C, crowds thin and prices fall. September still feels like full summer for the beach; October turns mild and golden — excellent again for the ancient city and beautiful for the temple at sunset. The warm autumn sea is a highlight. Excellent for history lovers, families and couples travelling after the peak.

Winter in Side (November–March)

Winters are mild but quiet and variable, with daytime highs of 15–21°C and the rainiest stretch of the year (wettest December–January). The sea cools to around 18–19°C — too chilly for most swimmers — and many beach resorts and boats close, though the old town keeps some year-round life. But this is the cheapest time by far, and the ancient city is beautifully quiet and cool — you can have the Temple of Apollo almost to yourself. If you come in winter, confirm in advance that your hotel and a few restaurants stay open, and pack a light jacket and a rain layer.

Side month-by-month at a glance

  • April — green, mild, cheap; cool sea, perfect for the ancient city and the temple.
  • May — warming up, sea swimmable late month; superb for sightseeing and great value.
  • June — warm sea, lively but pre-peak; excellent all-round.
  • July — peak heat and crowds, full beaches; explore ruins early.
  • August — peak and busiest; very hot, warmest sea, reserve everything early.
  • September — still summer, warm sea, thinning crowds; a top month.
  • October — mild, golden; excellent again for the ruins and the beach.
  • November — quiet, cooler, first rains; lowest prices, crowd-free temple.
  • December–March — mild but wet and quiet; cheapest, peaceful ancient city.

Best time to visit Side by type of traveller

  • History lovers: April–May and October for comfortable, uncrowded ruins; winter for the quietest visits to the Temple of Apollo.
  • Beach lovers & families: July–August for the warmest sea and the resorts, or late June and September for fewer crowds.
  • Couples: May, June and September–October — warm, romantic, with magical temple sunsets and better value.
  • Nightlife: July–August, when the old town and resort bars are at their busiest.
  • Budget travellers: November–March for the lowest prices, accepting a quieter resort.

The ancient city of Side

Roman statues and ruins from the ancient city of Side

Roman statues and ruins from the ancient city of Side

Side is one of the most rewarding ancient cities on the coast because you walk straight into it — through the monumental Vespasian Gate, along a colonnaded street, past the agora and the round temple of Tyche, to the huge Roman theatre that once seated up to 20,000. The old Roman baths now house the excellent Side Museum of statues and sarcophagi. The crown jewel is the Temple of Apollo, whose re-erected white marble columns stand on the very tip of the peninsula and glow gold at sunset — one of the most photographed sights in Turkey. Allow at least half a day, and visit the ruins early morning or late afternoon, especially in summer.

Side old town and harbour

Unusually, Side's ancient ruins are woven through a living town. The old town fills the peninsula with pedestrian lanes of restaurants, cafés and shops set among the columns and walls, leading down to a pretty harbour and the temple at the tip. Sunset here is a ritual — the crowds gather as the columns turn gold over the sea, followed by dinner and a stroll through the lamplit streets. It is touristy but genuinely atmospheric, and the mild shoulder seasons are the most comfortable and least crowded time to enjoy it.

Side's beaches

Long sandy Blue Flag beaches on the Side coast

Long sandy Blue Flag beaches on the Side coast

Side has long, golden, sandy Blue Flag beaches on both sides of its peninsula. West Beach, stretching toward Kumköy and Çolaklı, is the longer, sandier and livelier side, lined with beach clubs and resorts. East Beach, toward Sorgun and Titreyengöl, is backed by pine forest and feels calmer and more natural. The sand is golden, the sea warm and shallow, and the resorts maintain their own well-kept beach sections — ideal for families and a long, comfortable swimming season from late spring to autumn.

The resort belt: where to stay

Side anchors one of Turkey's great resort belts. Stay in Side town itself to be among the ruins, the old town and the harbour; choose Sorgun and Titreyengöl to the east for calmer, pine-backed luxury resorts; or Kumköy, Çolaklı and Gündoğdu to the west for long sandy beaches and big all-inclusives. All are within a short transfer of the ancient city and Manavgat. A private Antalya → Sorgun transfer or Antalya → Side transfer takes you straight to your hotel.

Manavgat and beyond

Just 7 km inland, neighbouring Manavgat adds a famous riverside waterfall, gentle river-boat cruises, the turquoise Green Canyon lake and a huge weekly market — an easy and rewarding day out from Side. A short Side → Manavgat transfer takes only minutes. Beyond that, the Köprülü Canyon rafting rivers and the great Roman theatre of Aspendos are within easy reach, making Side a superb base for combining beach, history and nature.

Aspendos and day trips from Side

  • Aspendos — the best-preserved Roman theatre in the world, about 35 km west, with a summer opera and ballet festival.
  • Manavgat — the riverside waterfall, Green Canyon boat tour and Monday market, 7 km away.
  • Köprülü Canyon — white-water rafting and pine forest, a great summer trip.
  • Alanya — the castle, Cleopatra Beach and caves, an easy trip east along the coast.
  • Side harbour boat trips — bays, swim stops and the coast, from the old harbour.

A little history of Side

Side was founded around the 7th century BC by Greek settlers, and its name means "pomegranate" in the ancient local language. A wealthy Hellenistic and Roman port, it was notorious in antiquity as a base for pirates and a centre of the slave trade, before flourishing peacefully under Rome in the 2nd century AD — the era of most of the monuments you see today. That long history, and the way the ruins blend into the modern resort, make the mild spring and autumn perfect for exploring without the heat.

Side vs Belek or Alanya

Choose Side if you want ancient ruins and a historic old town right beside your beach holiday, with the Temple of Apollo and a living archaeological site on your doorstep. Belek (west) is the golf-and-luxury-resort choice with forest beaches but fewer in-town sights; Alanya (east) adds a Seljuk castle, the warmest sea and a bigger nightlife. All share the same warm coast and the same airport; Side wins for the unbeatable mix of beach and antiquity.
