Fethiye & Ölüdeniz Guide: Blue Lagoon, Paragliding & Dalaman Transfers

Fethiye is where Turkey stops being a beach holiday and starts being an adventure. The town itself is a relaxed harbour with a marina, a famous Tuesday market and ancient Lycian rock tombs carved high into the cliff above it — the Tomb of Amyntas glowing gold at sunset. But most people come for what is just down the road: Ölüdeniz and its Blue Lagoon, routinely voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, where a sandspit curls around impossibly turquoise, sheltered water.

The Blue Lagoon alone justifies the trip — a protected nature park of clear shallow water backed by green hills. Above it rises Babadağ (1,960 m), from which tandem paragliders launch all day, spiralling down to land right on the Ölüdeniz beachfront; it is one of the best places on earth to try it.

Beyond that, Fethiye is an outdoor playground. The 12 Islands boat trip drifts around the bay's coves; Butterfly Valley is a sheer-sided beach reachable by boat; Saklıkent Gorge offers a cold-water canyon walk; and the Lycian Way, one of the world's great long-distance hikes, runs through. Fethiye is served by Dalaman Airport (DLM), about 50 km away — a 50-minute drive. (Antalya Airport is far too distant to be practical.) The route runs inland and then down to the coast, simple enough but long enough that comfort matters.
