Kaputaş Beach and the Hidden Coves of the Turquoise Coast

Some beaches you can drive right up to; the best ones on this coast make you work a little, and reward you completely. Kaputaş is the icon: a small cove of pale shingle and startlingly turquoise water, tucked at the foot of a gorge between Kaş and Kalkan, reached by a long flight of steps down from the coastal road. That short descent is what keeps it feeling like a discovery, even though it is one of Turkey's most photographed beaches.

Kaputaş is small, and that is the point. Framed by rocky cliffs at the mouth of a canyon, it has water of an almost unreal blue-green, cold and clear from the mountain stream that meets the sea there. It is a swimming-and-sunbathing beach rather than a resort strip — no big hotels, just the cove, the cliffs and the sea. Arriving down the steps to that first view of the turquoise water below is genuinely a wow moment.

Two honest notes. First, access is via a long staircase down (and, of course, back up), so it is not ideal for anyone who struggles with steps. Second, precisely because it is so famous and beautiful, Kaputaş can get busy in peak season, especially in the middle of the day. The answer to both is timing: go earlier or later to enjoy it at its calmest, and be ready for the climb back up in the heat.

Kaputaş is the famous one, but this stretch of coast hides many small beaches and coves, some reachable only on foot or by boat. Part of the pleasure of exploring the Kaş–Kalkan area is finding quieter spots away from the main beach — a boat trip in particular opens up coves you cannot reach by road at all. If Kaputaş is busy, a local can often point you to a quieter alternative nearby.

Kaputaş sits on the winding coast road between Kaş and Kalkan, a fair drive from the main resorts, and its roadside parking is limited and can be chaotic in season. A private transfer means you are dropped right at the top of the steps without a parking scramble, and picked up when you are done, sandy and happy — no worrying about a hot car or a full car park. For a beach that is all about the descent and the swim, that convenience is exactly right.

• Wear water shoes — the beach is shingle, not sand, and can be hard on bare feet.
• Bring everything you need — facilities at the cove are limited.
• Be ready for the steps both down and back up, especially in the heat.
• Consider a boat trip to reach the coves you cannot get to by road.
