Ankara: A Day in the Capital

Ankara is not a resort city and does not pretend to be. It is a working capital on the Anatolian plateau, and what it offers a visitor is concentration: the founding monument of the Republic, one of the finest archaeological museums in the world, and a castle hill where the older town survives more or less intact.

Anıtkabir

Atatürk's mausoleum dominates a hill west of the centre. The approach is deliberately long — a colonnaded avenue lined with stone lions, opening onto a vast ceremonial court — and the scale only registers once you are walking it. The changing of the guard draws a crowd, and the museum beneath the complex covers the War of Independence in detail. It is the one place in Ankara where visitors and locals are clearly there for the same reason.

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

Housed in a restored Ottoman bedesten and covered market below the castle, this museum tells Anatolia's story in objects: Neolithic finds from Çatalhöyük, Hittite reliefs and lion gates, Phrygian metalwork from Gordion, Urartian bronzes. If you have already walked Roman ruins on the coast, this is the collection that explains everything that came before them.

The castle quarter

Ankara Kalesi crowns the old town, its walls patched with recycled Roman masonry. Inside are steep lanes, timber-framed houses, spice and copper sellers, and a view across the whole city from the ramparts. Downhill lie the Temple of Augustus and the Hacı Bayram Mosque, Roman and Ottoman standing shoulder to shoulder on one square.

Practicalities

Ankara lies well inland, a long way north of the Mediterranean coast, so this is a full-day commitment rather than a half-day outing — confirm your departure time with us when you book, and plan a quiet evening afterwards.

Your WeCare booking covers hotel pickup and drop-off, air-conditioned transport, a professional English, German or Russian-speaking guide, all entrance fees, lunch at a local restaurant, bottled water and insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ankara was declared the capital on 13 October 1923. The national assembly had been meeting there since 1920, and its position in the middle of Anatolia, far from the coasts and from the old imperial centre, made it both a strategic and a symbolic choice for the young republic.
