After a short walk into the canyon and a safety briefing, you wade and swim upstream between sheer rock walls, scrambling over boulders, sliding down natural water chutes and — if you choose — leaping from low ledges into cool, clear pools. Guides secure the trickier sections with ropes, and you can skip any obstacle you'd rather watch. The cold mountain water is wonderfully refreshing in the summer heat.

A private experience means no 7am coach, no forty strangers and no gift-shop detours. It suits reasonably active adults and older children comfortable in water; you don't need to be an athlete, but expect to swim, climb and get wet. Nervous first-timers are well looked after — every jump and slide is optional, and instructors keep groups small and safe.

Wear a swimsuit under quick-dry clothes and bring trainers or sturdy sandals that can get soaked, plus a towel and dry clothes for after. Wetsuits are provided. Check minimum-age rules when booking; not advised with recent injuries or for non-swimmers.
