Carpet Workshop and Turkish Art Tour

A Turkish carpet is a record of where it was made. The knot, the wool, the dye plants and the pattern all place a piece within about a hundred kilometres of its loom. This day is spent in a working atelier watching that happen, close enough to hear the comb beating each row of knots down onto the last.

The double knot

Turkish weaving uses the symmetrical knot, wrapped around two warp threads instead of one. It is slower than the Persian alternative and it produces a denser, harder-wearing pile — a good weaver ties several thousand in a day, and a room-sized piece takes months of them. Watching a single row form is the quickest way to understand why prices vary the way they do.

Silk, wool and colour

Silk begins as cocoons in a bowl of hot water; the filaments are caught with a brush and reeled off as one continuous thread, and Turkish workshops still demonstrate it by hand. Wool comes off Anatolian sheep and behaves completely differently under the knife.

Natural dyeing is the other half of the craft: madder root for reds, indigo for blue, walnut husk and oak gall for browns, weld and onion skin for yellows. Colours shift slightly between dye lots, and that unevenness — abrash — is a mark of hand work rather than a fault.

Reading the patterns

Motifs carry meaning that predates the loom. The elibelinde, a stylised woman with her hands on her hips, stands for fertility; the ram's horn for strength; the running-water border for continuity. Around Antalya, the Döşemealtı style is the local signature: dark grounds, bold geometric medallions, wool on wool. Flatweave kilims, with no pile at all, follow a different logic again and are woven far faster.

The day itself

You are collected from your hotel and returned there in an air-conditioned Mercedes with an English, German or Russian-speaking guide. Entrance fees, insurance, bottled water and lunch at a local restaurant are included. Nothing obliges you to buy — but ask to see the back of any piece you like, because that is where the knot count tells the truth.
