Duden Waterfalls: One River, Two Very Different Drops

Most cities would be pleased with one waterfall. Antalya has the same river arriving twice — once inland in a wooded park, and once again at the edge of the city where the land simply stops and the water goes over a cliff into the sea. They are nothing alike, and seeing only one gives you half the story.

Upper Duden

Inland, the Duden river drops into a gorge shaded by plane trees and pine. The reason to come is the path: it runs behind the falling water, through a cave cut by the river itself, so you get the curtain of water from the inside with light coming through it. It is loud, cool and permanently damp — a genuine relief on a hot afternoon. The surrounding park is level and easy walking, with calmer pools upstream where terrapins sun themselves and local families spread out at the weekend.

Lower Duden

At the other end of the city, on the Lara side, the same river reaches the cliffs above the Mediterranean and falls straight off them into open water. There is no pool at the bottom; there is the sea. You take it in from the clifftop park, where the spray comes back up at you when the wind is onshore, or from the water looking up if you happen to be on a boat. The contrast with the upper falls is the whole point: one is enclosed, green and echoing, the other wide open with nothing beyond it but horizon.

Why this runs as a city tour

The two falls sit at opposite ends of Antalya, which makes them awkward on public transport and easy with a car. WeCare runs it privately with a Mercedes and a driver, hotel pickup and drop-off, a guide, entrance fees, lunch at a local restaurant, bottled water and insurance — so the day can take in other parts of the city between the two stops rather than being a shuttle between waterfalls.

Practical notes

Stone near the upper falls stays wet and slippery all year; wear shoes with grip and accept that you will get lightly sprayed. Cameras and phones benefit from a cloth. Both sites involve walking on paved paths rather than rough ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upper Düden lies about 12 km north-east of the city centre, where the river drops into a shaded canyon and a footpath runs behind the curtain of water through a tufa cave. Lower Düden, at Lara, plunges roughly 40 metres straight off a cliff into the Mediterranean.
