A Spa and Hamam Day, Door to Door

The Turkish bath is one of the few traditions in this country that has survived intact from Roman thermae through the Ottoman centuries to the present. Done properly it is not a quick rinse — it is a sequence, and the sequence is the point.

You start in a warm marble room and do nothing at all while the heat works. In the middle sits the göbek taşı, the heated navel stone, where you lie until the sweat comes. Then the kese: a coarse mitt worked over the skin by an attendant, removing a layer you did not know you were carrying. After that the foam — a cloth bag whipped into an absurd mountain of lather and poured over you — followed by a hair wash, a bucket of cool water and a long, slow sit in the cool room with tea. Nobody who has been through it once comes out in a hurry.

Most spa programmes add treatments on top of the bath itself: oil massage, a shorter neck-and-shoulder session, foot work. What you take is chosen on the day rather than fixed in advance, so tell the therapist about injuries, pregnancy or a preference for lighter pressure before you begin instead of enduring it politely.

The awkward part of any spa day is the end of it. Nobody wants to negotiate a taxi or work out a dolmuş route while still warm and half asleep.
