Salda: White Shores and Water That Changes Colour

People call Salda the Maldives of Turkey, which sells it short. The Maldives is coral and sand; Salda is a deep inland lake ringed by white mineral shores, sitting in a bowl of bare hills in Burdur province, and it looks like nothing else in the country.

Salda is one of the deepest lakes in Turkey, and the depth is what produces the colour gradient — a clear pale turquoise where the white mineral floor is a metre or two down, then a sharp line where the bed drops away and the water turns navy. The lake is strongly alkaline and rich in magnesium, which is also why the shoreline is so bright.

The pale material along the shore is not sand. It is hydromagnesite, formed by microbial activity in the shallows, and it is the reason planetary scientists took an interest: NASA studied Salda as an earthly stand-in for Jezero Crater on Mars, where similar carbonate deposits sit around an ancient lakebed. The Perseverance rover landed there in 2021 looking for exactly the kind of traces Salda produces naturally.

That same shore is fragile, and it does not regenerate on a human timescale. Salda is under special environmental protection, swimming and access are limited to designated areas, and taking the white material away with you is prohibited. This is worth knowing in advance so the restrictions read as sensible rather than as a disappointment on arrival.

There is very little shade at the lake and almost no built-up shoreline, which is precisely the appeal. You come for the walk along the white edge, for the water — cold, clean and clear — and for a horizon of scrubby hills with no buildings on it. The colours are strongest under high sun, which is unusual for photography and true here.
