WeCare Premium Tour: Thermessos: The Eagle's Nest Ancient City
Termessos — perched at 1,000m elevation on the Toros mountainside 30 km west of Antalya — is one of Turkey's most spectacular and least visited ancient cities. Alexander the Great famously failed to conquer Termessos in 333 BC, calling it "the eagle's nest." The site offers ancient theatre, agora, temples, necropolis, and panoramic views of the Gulf of Antalya 1,000m below. WeCare runs the half-day with chauffeur and walking-trail support.
What the Half-Day Looks Like
08:30 — Hotel pickup. Chauffeur in your hotel lobby with name card. Mercedes V-Class for the 60-minute mountain drive.
08:30-09:30 — Drive Antalya → Termessos. 30 km via the D650 inland highway, then 9 km on the mountain access road up to 1,000m elevation. Winding switchback section in the final 5 km.
09:30-12:30 — Termessos archaeological walking. Hiking the ancient city — Roman theatre (cliff-edge dramatic), agora ruins, Temple of Zeus, Temple of Artemis, the famous necropolis (rock-cut tombs scattered through pine forest), Cestrius gate, Hadrian gate, walking through the partially-restored colonnades. Site entry 200 TRY.
12:30-13:30 — Lunch at Güllük Dağı park café. Light lunch at the Termessos Karain park café — Turkish breakfast or grilled meat. Or pack picnic from your hotel.
13:30-14:30 — Karain Cave (optional combo). 7 km from Termessos. Paleolithic cave with archaeological remains of human habitation from 200,000+ years ago. Smaller site, 30-45 minutes.
14:30-15:30 — Drive back to Antalya. Arrive at hotel ~15:30.
Why History Enthusiasts Pick Termessos
Termessos is one of Turkey's most under-rated ancient sites — well-preserved theater and necropolis, dramatic mountain setting, minimal tourist crowds (40 visitors per day average vs. 5,000+ at Ephesus). The hiking required (1-2 km of moderate uphill) keeps casual tourists away, which makes for an atmospheric archaeological experience.
Total Distance & Drive Time
~30 km each way (60 km round-trip) + 9 km mountain access. Total half-day length 6-7 hours.
What's Included
- Private Mercedes V-Class for 1-4 passengers (Sprinter for 5-8)
- Senior chauffeur (English/German-speaking)
- Bottled water, climate-pre-set cabin
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Hand-calculated fixed half-day rate
- Site entry NOT included (200 TRY)
- Lunch NOT included
What to Wear / Bring
- Hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers (rocky uphill paths, not sandals)
- Long pants advisable (some thorny vegetation)
- Sun hat + sunscreen (limited shade)
- Bottled water (refill at park café)
- Camera (the theater + necropolis views are spectacular)
Termessos Walking Distance
The main archaeological zone is 1-2 km of walking with moderate elevation changes. Allow 2-3 hours to see the major monuments. The most distant necropolis sections add another 1-2 hours if you want to see everything.
Combo Options
- Termessos + Karain Cave (full half-day)
- Termessos + Düden Waterfalls (afternoon)
- Termessos + Antalya Old Town (full day)
Best Times
April-June and September-November — ideal walking temperatures. Avoid July-August midday (limited shade at 1,000m elevation). Winter visits are dramatic — snow on pine forests, but check for road closures.
