A Real Hammam, Not a Hotel Sauna

The Turkish bath is a five-hundred-year-old routine that has survived because it works, and it follows the same order every time. Knowing that order in advance is most of what nervous first-timers need.

You start in the marble steam room and do nothing for a while. That is the point — the heat has to open your skin before anything else happens. Then comes the kese, a coarse mitt scrub that removes a genuinely startling amount of dead skin; people are usually more amused than embarrassed by the evidence. The foam wash follows, poured from a cloth bag in soft drifts of bubbles, and then an aroma oil massage. Tea at the end, in the cool room, is not an afterthought — it is how the whole thing is supposed to close.

• Towel, slippers and lockers are all provided, so you do not need to pack anything.
• Hygiene standards are modern; the tradition is old, the plumbing is not.
• Do not arrive on a heavy meal. The heat and a full stomach are a poor combination.

Most guests keep swimwear or underwear on under the wrap. Nobody will comment either way.

It is a good choice for a first day, when you want to shed a flight, and an even better one for a day when the sun is punishing and you would rather be somewhere cool and dim. It also pairs well with an evening you want to feel unhurried.

It is worth understanding what the building is, too. The hammam grew out of the Roman bath and was absorbed into Ottoman city life as a social institution as much as a hygienic one — a place where news was exchanged, marriages were arranged and weddings were prepared for. That is why the layout is always the same three rooms: cold, warm, hot. You are moving through a sequence that has not needed redesigning in five centuries.
