Antalya on a Budget: How to Do the Coast for Less

The Antalya coast has a reputation for glamorous five-star resorts, but it can also be a genuinely affordable destination if you know where the value is. Between free beaches, cheap and delicious local food, low-cost transport and off-peak deals, a great coast holiday need not cost a fortune. Here is a practical guide to enjoying Antalya on a budget.

Much of the coast's best is free. The beaches — including the long city beach of Konyaaltı and Lara's golden sand — cost nothing to enjoy beyond perhaps a sunbed. Wandering the old town of Kaleiçi, seeing Hadrian's Gate and the harbour, and enjoying the waterfalls of Düden are all free or nearly so. Even where ancient sites charge admission, it is modest, and the scenery — mountains, coves, sunsets — is free everywhere. The coast's natural and historic riches are among its best-value experiences.

Food is where budgets are easily blown or beautifully saved. Skip the tourist-strip restaurants and eat where locals do: a pide (Turkish flatbread) or lahmacun, a döner, a bowl of soup, fresh simit from a cart, or a plate from a local lokanta (home-style eatery) are all cheap, filling and delicious. A local breakfast, street snacks and lunch from a bakery cost a fraction of resort dining, and are often better. Markets are great for cheap fresh fruit too.

Transport can be very affordable. The dolmuş (shared minibus) runs frequently between towns and along the resort strips for very little, and the city has cheap trams and buses with a travel card. For groups, a shared or single private transfer split between several people can be very reasonable per head, especially for the airport run with luggage — worth comparing against multiple taxis or the hassle of the dolmuş with bags. Match the cheapest sensible option to each trip.

When you go makes a big difference to cost. Peak summer (July–August) is the most expensive time; travelling in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, or even the mild winter, brings lower prices on flights and accommodation, along with smaller crowds and pleasant weather for sightseeing. For a budget trip, avoiding the peak is one of the single biggest savings, and the weather is often better for exploring anyway.

Smart budget travel is about choosing what matters. Save on the everyday — eat local, use the dolmuş, enjoy the free beaches and sights, travel off-peak — so you can spend on the one or two experiences you will really remember, whether that is a boat trip, a special dinner or a comfortable, stress-free transfer for the arrival. A little planning lets a modest budget still cover the coast's highlights.
