What to Pack for Antalya: A Practical Holiday Packing Guide

Packing for a beach holiday seems simple until you are standing on a pebble beach in bare feet, or turned away from a mosque for bare shoulders. Antalya rewards a little forethought: as well as the obvious beach kit, a few specific items make the trip smoother. Here is a practical, no-nonsense packing guide for the Antalya coast.

The Antalya sun is strong, especially in summer, so sun protection is the first priority. Pack a high-factor sunscreen (and enough of it), a hat, sunglasses and something to cover up in the midday sun. A light long-sleeved top is invaluable both for sun protection and for cooler evenings. Do not underestimate the sun even in spring and autumn — it is stronger than many visitors expect.

Footwear is the item people most often get wrong. Many of the coast's beaches are pebble rather than sand, so a pair of water shoes saves your feet and makes swimming far more pleasant. For the ancient sites — Perge, Aspendos, Termessos and the rest — you want proper walking shoes, as the ground is uneven and often involves climbing. Flip-flops alone will not cover a trip that mixes beach and sightseeing.

If you plan to visit a mosque, modest dress is required: shoulders and knees covered, and a headscarf for women. It is worth packing a light scarf and something to cover your legs and shoulders, which also helps at some religious or conservative sites and simply for cooler evenings. You do not need to dress conservatively at the resort or beach, but having a cover-up option makes visiting these places easy and respectful.

A few small items make a real difference:

• A plug adapter — Turkey uses the European-style two-round-pin sockets (230V); bring an adapter if your plugs differ.
• A reusable water bottle — it is hot, and staying hydrated matters.
• A light layer or jacket — for air-conditioned interiors, cooler evenings and any mountain trips.
• A small daypack — for excursions, the beach and sightseeing days.
• Any regular medication and a small first-aid kit, as you would anywhere.

Adjust for when you travel. In high summer, it is all about sun protection and light, breathable clothing. In spring and autumn, add a warmer layer for the evenings. In winter, pack properly for mild but cooler, sometimes wet weather — and if you plan a mountain or ski day, bring warm clothing, as the Taurus peaks are a different climate entirely from the coast.

Packing well for Antalya is mostly common sense with a few local specifics: serious sun protection, water shoes for the pebble beaches, proper shoes for the ruins, a cover-up for mosques, and a plug adapter and water bottle for practicality.
