Kaleiçi: A Walking Guide to Antalya's Old Town

Beyond the beaches and the resorts, Antalya has a genuine old soul, and it lives in Kaleiçi — the walled old town wrapped around the historic harbour. A maze of narrow cobbled lanes, restored Ottoman mansions, small museums, boutique hotels and courtyard cafés, all above a pretty yacht-filled marina, Kaleiçi is the one part of the city that asks you simply to wander. Here is how to make the most of a stroll through it.

The natural place to begin is Hadrian's Gate, a beautifully preserved triple-arched marble gateway built in the second century to honour a visit by the Roman emperor Hadrian. Passing through it into the old town is a small piece of theatre — you step from the modern city through a nearly two-thousand-year-old arch straight into history. From here the lanes of Kaleiçi open up ahead of you.

The lanes slope down to the old Roman harbour, now a marina where wooden gulets and yachts moor beneath the old walls. It is a lovely spot to pause, watch the boats, and take a coffee with a view. From here you can also pick up a short boat trip along the coast to see the cliffs and the Düden waterfall from the water. The harbour is the postcard view of old Antalya.

At the seaward edge of Kaleiçi stands the Hıdırlık Tower, a stout Roman-era tower whose exact original purpose is still debated, set in a clifftop park with sweeping views over the bay to the mountains beyond. It is the classic spot for sunset, when the light turns golden over the sea and the Taurus range. Ending a Kaleiçi wander here, with an evening view, is the perfect close to the day.

Kaleiçi is a walking experience — you park once and explore on foot — so the practical question is simply getting there and back from your resort, which may be some distance away.
