Aspendos and Perge: The Ancient Cities on Antalya's Doorstep

Many visitors to Antalya assume the great Roman ruins are far inland, alongside Pamukkale. In fact two of Turkey's finest ancient sites sit right on the coast's doorstep, close enough to combine into a relaxed half or full day without a long drive. Aspendos and Perge are the pair worth knowing, and they make one of the easiest and most rewarding trips from the resorts.

Aspendos is famous for one extraordinary thing: its Roman theatre, widely regarded as the best-preserved of the ancient world. Built in the second century, it still stands almost complete — the stage building, the tiered seating, the acoustics all intact enough that it is still used for performances today. Standing in the middle of it is genuinely moving in a way photographs cannot convey. Around the theatre are further remains, including a striking aqueduct, but the theatre alone is worth the trip.

Perge, much closer to Antalya and only a short drive from the airport, offers something different: not one great monument but an entire ancient city to walk through. A long colonnaded street, a stadium, baths, gates and an agora spread across a wide site, giving a real sense of how a Greco-Roman city was laid out and lived in. It is less about a single showpiece and more about wandering among the bones of a city, which many people find just as memorable.

The two complement each other neatly. Aspendos is the single unforgettable structure; Perge is the immersive walk-through city. Both are close to the coast and to each other, so a private day can take in both at an unhurried pace, with time to actually absorb them rather than rushing between coach stops. Add the nearby Manavgat area or a waterfall, and you have a rich day that never involves a long journey.

Ruins reward time and quiet, which is exactly what a group coach tour struggles to give. With your own driver you arrive when the light is good and the crowds are thin, linger where something catches you, and move on when you are ready. There is no waiting for a group to reassemble, no fixed twenty minutes per site. For places this atmospheric, being able to stand quietly in an empty theatre for a while is the whole point.

You do not need a long expedition to stand inside a near-perfect Roman theatre or walk the streets of an ancient city — both are on Antalya's doorstep.
