Staying Connected: SIM Cards & WiFi at Turkish Airports

Getting online when you land in Turkey is easy, but a couple of local quirks are worth knowing — especially one phone-registration rule that catches some travellers out. Here is how to stay connected, from the airport onwards.

Turkey's main airports offer free Wi-Fi, usually for a limited time after a quick sign-in (often by passport or an SMS code). It is fine for messaging your transfer driver, checking maps or letting family know you have landed, but it is time-limited, so it is not a substitute for mobile data for your whole trip.

If your phone supports it, an eSIM is the simplest way to get data: buy a Turkey eSIM online before you fly, then activate it the moment you land — no queues and no phone-registration hassle. It is ideal for short trips and keeps your home number active for calls and texts.

You can buy a physical SIM from Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom kiosks at the airport, though airport prices are higher than in town and you will need your passport.
